Dandruff is a common condition in which the scalp produces white flaky matter, emanating from it during all seasons. Dandruff forms when dead cells of the scalp mix with oil, clump together, and forms white flakes. The dead cells are mostly the result of a mild inflammation of the scalp caused by a fungus called malassezia. This tiny organism grows rapidly on the scalp under conditions of stress, suppressed immunity, hormonal imbalance in the body, and lack of cleanliness, increased oiliness of the skin, and diseases or illness.

The formation of dandruff is often accompanied by itching of the scalp. Treatment of dandruff is mainly focused on developing formulas and applying home remedies. Following is a brief description of more effective home remedies for dandruff.

Home Remedies for Dandruff Control

Fenugreek Seeds

Fenugreek seeds are widely used as a dandruff home remedy. Soaking a couple of tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in water at night and grounding them into a paste in the morning provides an easy home-made dandruff cure. The fenugreek seed paste should be applied on the scalp and let it stay there for an hour. Washing the scalp and hair well with soap-nut or shikakai cleanses the scalp from dandruff.

Curd and Lime

An easy home treatment for dandruff is applying curd or lime juice to the scalp. After keeping the curd in open for two to three days, the scalp should be massaged with it for half an hour and left for some time, and then washed thoroughly to remove the curd and the dandruff. Another one of the tried home remedies for dandruff is lime juice. A few drops of lime juice mixed with a little Amla juice should be used daily at night (before going to bed) to massage the scalp. Washing in the morning clears the scalp of all dandruff.

Washing and Brushing

This is one dandruff home remedy that does not cost anything and is most easily followed. Washing the hair at least three times a week without using a harsh shampoo or formula helps clean the scalp of the fungi that cause dandruff. Chemical dyes should be avoided as much as possible. Brushing the hair daily and thoroughly massaging the scalp with one’s fingertips stimulate blood flow to the roots of hair. Thus dandruff is easily dislodged and the growth of new hair is facilitated.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Mixing one-fourth of a cup of apple cider vinegar with equal amount of water makes a good anti-dandruff mixture. It should be sprayed into hair and scalp, wrapping the head afterwards in a clean towel. After about 45 minutes, the towel should be removed and hair thoroughly washed. It is important to save the eyes from the mixture while spraying it into the hair. The solution of apple cider vinegar should be applied in this way once or twice a week.

Beetroot and Ginger Juice

Mixing beetroot juice in vinegar and applying to the scalp helps in removing dandruff. Beetroot may be mixed with an equal amount of ginger juice and applied to the scalp. Upon washing hair after a while will clear the head and remove dandruff.

Dietary Control on Dandruff

Diet also helps control the problem of dandruff to some degree. Including more fresh juicy fruits and leafy vegetables in daily diet has a positive effect on health of the scalp and hair. Meats, white flour, sugar, strong tea and coffee, and the intake of all kinds of processed foods should be reduced in order to assist the body in dandruff treatment via home remedies.

Grey hair is one of the familiar signs of ageing. This process is actually depends on your genetic inheritance. The average age when your hair starts becoming gray is 50; however because of the stressful life and other lifestyle changes, your hair may turn grey by the age of 30.

To get rid of the white hair, cut them close to the hair roots. Hair colouring and dying is also a good solution for grey hair. As an alternative method you can use henna conditioning also.

Avoid excessive intake of tea, coffee, oily foods, alcohol etc. in order to prevent grey hair.

Just as skin type varies from person to person, so too does the hair. Here is the detailed description of various hair types.

Oily Hair

The hair is kept healthy and lustrous by the natural oil produced by the sebaceous glands in the scalp. When these glands become over-active and produce excess sebum, the hair looks lank and lifeless and becomes greasy soon after washing. Frequent hair washing with a mild shampoo is a good choice. Women with oily hair should oil their hair once a fortnight or so and leave it on for not more than half an hour. This will help to nourish the roots, which do not benefit nutritionally from the oil on the scalp.

Dry Hair

Hair usually becomes dry because of a lack of oil and water content at the cellular level on the scalp. Dry hair looks dull and is prone to breaking and splitting because it should be done very gently. The weather affects hair quickly and exposure to sunrays and wind will further dry it. Make sure to shampoo your hair only when necessary, using lukewarm water. Never brush hair when it is wet – it will break.

Normal Hair

Healthy, shiny hair has almost always had a good start because of well-balanced hormone levels and an ideal internal chemistry, but to keep it in fine condition you need to look after your hair carefully. Normal hair, however strong, can be damaged easily if not cared properly. Wash gently only as often as needed and condition to keep it shiny.

Conditioners put life back into the dull hair and are simple to make at home. Hair Conditioning should be considered as important as shampooing to provide your hair with the right moisture it needs. Many hair conditioners available in the market can help your hair enormously.

Step for Hair Conditioning

1. Wash your hair with a good shampoo and gently squeeze the remaining excess water.

2. Take a dab of conditioner and rub it well through the hair using fingers. The important point to remember here is that rub conditioner to your hair only and not to the scalp.

3. Wait for around 5 minutes and then rinse the hair well to remove any traces of conditioner.

Homemade Hair Conditioners

Here are some home-made recipes for conditioners.

Henna Conditioner for Dark Hair: The addition of yoghurt and oil considerably reduces the ability of henna to color. However, certain strong types of henna could overcome this, and in lighter hair the conditioner might leave behind some color. The conditioner is therefore recommended only for dark hair.

1 cup henna powder
2 cups plain live yoghurt
1 tbsp olive oil

Stir all the above ingredients together till the mixture resembles a mud. Wearing gloves, work with henna into the hair, parting it and treating each section from the scalp down to the tip till the whole head is covered. Coil your hair on top of your hair if it is long or smooth it into wings from the side of your head to the back if it is short. Leave for an hour and wash off. You will need patience for this as washing dried henna out of the hair takes a little time.

These days, varieties of shampoos are available. Shampooing is necessary to wash, clean and remove all the dirt particles from the scalp.

How frequently you shampoo your hair is actually depends on your hair type. If your hair is oily, then you need to wash the hair more frequently than the one having dry hair.
